The MWRD has annually celebrated Juneteenth with flag raisings that recognize the holiday’s meaning and prioritize diversity, equity and inclusion in meeting the MWRD’s mission of protecting water quality and managing stormwater for 5.19 million residents living in Chicago and 128 neighboring municipalities.

MWRD Board of Commissioners and staff gathered in front of the Barbara J. McGowan Main Office Building for their fourth annual Juneteenth flag raising Friday.

Milkweed is also a native plant that can help absorb rainwater that would otherwise contribute to flooding.

The contest categories include Best Curb Appeal Gardening, Best Backyard Oasis, Best Herb and Vegetable Garden, Best Pollinator Garden, and Best Bungalow Window Box.

Declaring its commitment to freedom, achievement and equality, the MWRD will celebrate Juneteenth with a flag raising ceremony and parade participation.
