The WMO works to protect public health, safety, and welfare and Cook County homes and businesses from flood damage by managing and mitigating the effects of development and redevelopment on stormwater drainage. 

The MWRD Board of Commissioners approved the selected projects on May 2 as part of the annual call for projects through the Green Infrastructure Partnership Program (GIPP).

Visitors were led on tours by knowledgeable staff who explained the processes and the vital role these facilities play in protecting area waterways.

Visitors can step back in time and learn how the Lockport Powerhouse helped establish the canal to save the Chicago region and reverse the flow of the Chicago and Calumet River systems.

This year’s project will add two green alleyways to Forest Park’s existing three.
