UIC School of Law honors MWRD Commissioner Mariyana Spyropoulos with Alumni Public Service Award
The Alumni Council at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) School of Law presented Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) Commissioner Mariyana Spyropoulos with the Alumni Public Service Award. The Alumni Council said they voted to select Commissioner Spyropoulos for the honor based on her ability to exemplify the mission and ideals of her alma mater.
"I am honored to be recognized with the UIC School of Law Public Service Award,” said Commissioner Spyropoulos. “My legal education and experience along with my family encouraged me to pursue a career of public service. I am proud to have been elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2016 to serve the people of Cook County at MWRD. I have always sought how best to serve the interest of the people who elected me. Thank you to UIC Law for this honor."
Lauren Prihoda Weiner, executive director of the UIC School of Law Office of Alumni Relations and Development, wrote that “Through your efforts and noteworthy accomplishments you have brought great honor to the profession and to UIC Law School, and for that, we thank you.”
Commissioner Spyropoulos was elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2016. She was elected as chairman of finance in January 2013 and president of the Board of Commissioners in January 2015 and 2017. Commissioner Spyropoulos also serves as chairman of the Judiciary and Pension, Human Resources and Civil Service Committees. She is vice chairman of the Labor and Industrial Relations and Municipalities Committees and serves as trustee of the MWRD Retirement Fund. From January 2011 through December 2021, Commissioner Spyropoulos was appointed by the Board of Commissioners to serve on the Public Building Commission of Chicago.
Commissioner Spyropoulos previously served as an Assistant Cook County State's Attorney. She also has an MBA from Loyola University Chicago and lives in Chicago with her husband.
