Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

Chicago River Swim 2025

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) congratulates the organizers and participants of the Chicago River Swim. This event not only showcased the beauty and vibrancy of the Chicago River but also highlights the improvements in water quality implemented throughout our 136 year history.

The MWRD is pleased that our efforts over the past century, including the planning and construction of the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has greatly improved water quality in our area waterways.

The MWRD commends the Chicago River Swim organization for recognizing the significant safety concerns that come with swimming in the Chicago River, such as the presence of heavy commercial and recreational boat traffic.  The organizers implemented many safety measures for this event, including stationing over 100 safety personnel along the swim course.
