Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) welcomed the seasonal return of the iconic Nicholas J. Melas Centennial Fountain with a special kickoff event held on May 15. Chicago’s 42nd Ward Alderman Brendan Reilly and community partners invited the public to gather along the Chicago Riverwalk as the MWRD activated the fountain and celebrated the start of the river recreation season.

Board of Commissioners celebrate opening day of Centennial Fountain

MWRD Commissioner Kari K. Steele highlighted the importance of the fountain and its place in Chicago’s river culture.

“This fountain is more than a beautiful landmark—it represents the MWRD’s commitment to water stewardship and our connection to the river,” said MWRD President Kari K. Steele. “We're proud to celebrate its return and the joy it brings each season.”

Located on the north bank of the Chicago River at McClurg Court, the fountain was originally constructed in 1989 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the MWRD’s establishment. The fountain is named in honor of Nicholas J. Melas, a former MWRD commissioner who was first elected in 1962 and served the agency for 30 years, including 18 years as president.

“The Nicholas J. Melas Centennial Fountain is enjoyed by residents of Chicago and tourists alike. It is truly a pleasure to have this jewel in the 42nd Ward,” said Alderman Reilly.

The fountain was designed by renowned Chicago architect Dirk Lohan, grandson and collaborator of Mies van der Rohe. Lohan’s design reflected the flow of water across the continent, beginning with small watersheds and streams and culminating in larger bodies of water that eventually merge into the ocean.

“The opening of the Nicholas J. Melas Centennial Fountain marks the beginning of the much-anticipated summer months in Chicago,” said MWRD Commissioner Eira Corral Sepúlveda. “This iconic fountain also serves as a tribute to Nicholas Melas, who was committed to public service as both Board President and the longest-serving Commissioner at the MWRD.  We cannot think of no other way than to honor his legacy with the beautiful arch of water that this fountain displays for Chicagoans and visitors to enjoy.”
