MWRD Commissioners and staff will raise the LGBTQIA+ flag on Tuesday, June 1 at 10 a.m. at the Main Office building and for the first time, at all seven water reclamation plants in honor of Pride Month.

The MWRD and commissioners have been advocates in expanding the benefits and healthcare coverage for same sex couples and participating in the annual Chicago Pride Parade.

In June 2020, the MWRD approved a new policy that will promote opportunities for small business enterprises owned and operated by members of the LGBT community. Under this policy, LGBT business enterprises (LGBTBE) will have the opportunity to attend MWRD vendor fairs, events, meetings and other activities that foster business opportunities. The policy outlined the MWRD’s plans to create a certification process for LGBTBE vendors and collect data to learn more about LGBTBEs in the MWRD’s service area, which covers 882 square miles of Cook County and serves 10 million people daily.
