MWRD honors Geoffrey Baer for educating the public about water infrastructure
Geoffrey Baer, renowned WTTW host, writer, and producer, was honored by the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) for his exceptional work in educating the public about environmental issues and highlighting the critical connection between water infrastructure and ecological sustainability in the Chicago region. Baer received a resolution at the May 1 Board meeting.

A nine-time Emmy Award winner, Baer has long been celebrated for his engaging documentaries that delve into the architectural and cultural tapestry of Chicago. His work has illuminated the intricate relationship between the city's development and its waterways, bringing to light the significance of institutions like the MWRD.
“Geoffrey Baer has a unique talent for taking complex subjects and making them more understandable and fascinating,” said MWRD President Kari K. Steele. “His dedication to educating the public about our region’s water infrastructure aligns perfectly with our mission to promote awareness and stewardship of our vital water resources.”
In programs such as The Chicago River Tour and Ask Geoffrey, Baer has explored the evolution of the region’s water systems, including the reversal of the Chicago River and the operations of MWRD water reclamation plants. His storytelling has provided viewers with a deeper appreciation of the engineering feats and environmental efforts that have shaped the region.
“I am deeply honored to be recognized by the MWRD,” said Baer. “Water is the lifeblood of any city, and the MWRD’s innovative approach to managing our water resources is a story worth telling. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share these narratives with the public.”
Before producing popular programs on WTTW, he served as a volunteer docent with the Chicago Architecture Center—an experience that sparked his journey to WTTW and a lasting fascination with the Chicago River, which he has frequently documented since his first WTTW production, Chicago by Boat.

“Geoffrey Baer’s storytelling not only honors Chicago’s rich water history but also sparks vital conversations about our environment and climate future,” said Commissioner Precious Brady-Davis. “As someone deeply committed to environmental justice, I’m inspired by his work to make complex ecological issues understandable and engaging for all communities. His voice helps bridge the gap between science and everyday life.”
