The Board of Commissioners are responsible for providing financial oversight and establishing policies and procedures which meet the MWRD’s objective of protecting the water environment for the citizens of Cook County. The MWRD commissioners are elected at large and serve on a salaried, part-time basis. Three commissioners are elected every two years for six-year terms.
Created in 1889 as the Sanitary District of Chicago, the MWRD today is an award-winning, special-purpose district responsible for treating wastewater and providing stormwater management for residents and businesses in its service area, which encompasses 882.1 square miles and includes Chicago and 128 suburban communities throughout Cook County. In its daily role, the MWRD strives to protect businesses, homes and neighborhoods from flood damages, clean wastewater entering water reclamation plants and manage water as a vital resource for the area, protecting area waterways and the source of drinking water in Lake Michigan. The MWRD is known famously throughout the world for its work reversing the flow of the Chicago and Calumet River Systems, constructing the North Shore Channel and the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan, also known as “TARP” or the “Deep Tunnel,” and developing groundbreaking technologies to recover and reuse valuable resources to protect the planet.
