Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

WHO/WHAT: Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) Commissioners-elect Yumeka Brown (6-year), Patricia Theresa Flynn (6-year), Commissioner Mariyana Spyropoulos (6-year) and Commissioner-elect Daniel Pogorzelski (2-year) will be installed during a swearing-in ceremony for the MWRD’s Board of Commissioners.

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) will hold its Board of Commissioners’ Annual Meeting and commissioners’ installation ceremony on Tuesday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, seating will be limited in the MWRD Board Room.

Responsible for providing financial oversight and establishing policies and procedures, the MWRD Board of Commissioners strives to meet the MWRD’s objective of protecting the water environment for the citizens of Cook County. During the meeting, President Kari K. Steele will also release the President’s Annual Message for 2022.

Created in 1889 as the Sanitary District of Chicago, the MWRD today is an award-winning, special-purpose district responsible for treating wastewater and providing stormwater management for residents and businesses in its service area, which encompasses 882.1 square miles and includes Chicago and 128 suburban communities throughout Cook County. In its daily role, the MWRD strives to protect businesses, homes and neighborhoods from flood damages, clean wastewater entering water reclamation plants and manage water as a vital resource, protecting area waterways and the source of drinking water in Lake Michigan. The MWRD is known throughout the world for its work reversing the flow of the Chicago and Calumet River Systems, constructing the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, North Shore Channel, Cal-Sag Channel, the Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) and developing groundbreaking technologies to recover and reuse valuable resources to protect the planet.
