Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

Rails: Blue Island Public Library is excited to announce that the construction of a green roof at the Library has been completed. This amazing investment in sustainable building and environmental protection has been made possible through a partnership with Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. The green roof will slow the flow of storm water into the city's combined sewer system, lowering the likelihood of sewer backup in the Blue Island Community, and will also assist in mitigating the effects of the urban heat island in the uptown area of Blue Island. The roof is green and beautiful, and provides habitat for pollinators. And not least, will provide protection for the library building and collections for decades to come!

Blue Island Library accepts MWRD Green Infrastructure award

Blue Island Public Library was delighted to be honored with the 2025 MWRD Excellence in Green Infrastructure Installation Award at the 13th Annual Sustainability Summit in Cicero. This partnership was an excellent opportunity to be a part of building a more sustainable future for the Blue Island community.
