What We Do
The Mission of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago
The MWRD will protect the health and safety of the public in its service area, protect the quality of the water supply source (Lake Michigan), improve the quality of water in watercourses in its service area, protect businesses and homes from flood damages, and manage water as a vital resource for its service area.
Protecting Water Quality
Thanks to the work of the MWRD, water quality has improved dramatically in Chicago area rivers and streams. The source of the region’s drinking water in Lake Michigan is protected through more than a century of the MWRD’s work.
Wastewater Treatment
The MWRD treats wastewater from Chicago and 128 surrounding communities at our seven water reclamation plants.
Budget
The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District's annual budget is a $1.4 billion financially responsible spending plan that invests in public infrastructure, addresses regional and localized flooding issues, and continues a commitment to fully funding the Retirement Fund.
