Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago

""

Despite the unpredictable and often turbulent flow of water entering the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago’s (MWRD’s) water reclamation plants (WRPs), the MWRD continues to meet stringent permits to ensure what leaves the facility is clean water that meets the highest national standards.

The National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) has recognized the MWRD with six Platinum 5 Peak Performance Awards for five years of 100 percent compliance in meeting National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits. Treating up to 1.44 billion gallons of wastewater per day, the Stickney Water Reclamation Plant had its fifth straight year of full compliance. The Stickney WRP is considered one of the largest facilities of its kind in the world offering full secondary treatment.

“Congratulations to our incredible staff on this well-deserved recognition,” said MWRD President Kari K. Steele. “This honor reflects the unwavering dedication, expertise, and excellence of our team in protecting our region’s precious water resources. No matter the challenge—be it a major storm event, infrastructure demands, or unexpected hazards—our staff rises to the occasion with professionalism and pride, ensuring our waterways remain clean and safe for our communities and the environment.”

As a Platinum 5 Peak Performance honoree, the MWRD will be recognized with a formal presentation of its award at an awards ceremony on July 23 at NACWA’s Utility Leadership Conference and 55th Annual Meeting at the Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

“These platinum honors provide residents and taxpayers the assurance that our water reclamation plants are fulfilling our mission in protecting our waterways,” said MWRD Commissioner Sharon Waller. “Thank you to our hard-working staff who prove every day how essential their services are to protect our quality of life.
