The mission of CIS of Chicago is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The Spirit of Giving Award was established by the Communities In Schools of Chicago Board of Directors in 2004 to recognize the commitment and dedication of partners as they work to support young people through partnerships and collaborations.

“The Spirit of Giving Award gives us the opportunity to annually recognize one community partner and one school partner who met the expectations of our Certificate of Excellence partners and consistently went above and beyond expectations and impacted their community through a commitment to bettering the lives of our youth,” said Alexi Siegel, Academic Enrichment Partnership Specialist, CIS of Chicago. “Partners largely do this work under the radar - day in and day out - simply because it is the right thing to do. This award is intended to recognize this work and the outstanding community leaders serving Chicago’s children.”

“Our staff work tirelessly to educate and inspire the next generation, and this recognition by Communities In Schools reaffirms the power of that work,” said MWRD President Kari K. Steele. “Receiving this award is a tremendous honor and a reflection of the values we hold as a government agency.

The MWRD educates students about the science behind the water cycle, careers in engineering and environmental science, and how individual choices—like properly disposing of waste and conserving water—can make a lasting difference. The MWRD’s interactive programs promote environmental stewardship, civic responsibility, and interest in STEM careers, all while emphasizing the value of clean water and sustainable infrastructure. Programs are presented in English and Spanish.

Over the past decade, the MWRD Public Affairs team has reached thousands of students across the region. Through hands-on environmental education, STEM-focused initiatives, and career exploration opportunities, the team continues to highlight the vital role of water and sustainability in everyday life.

“We believe in opening doors for young people and showing them that they have a place in shaping the future of our region,” said Commissioner Beth McElroy Kirkwood. “This award symbolizes a shared mission—to lift up every student, no matter their zip code.”

The award was presented at CIS of Chicago’s annual event on May 15, where nonprofit and civic leaders gathered to celebrate the power of community investment in student success.
