As part of “Virtual Outdoors Week”, sponsored by Cook County Commissioner Kevin Morrison (D-15th), the commissioner will host a long-standing, in-person event next week: the Busse Lake Fishing Derby.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 19 in Grove 25 of Busse Woods.

“We are fortunate to have many opportunities to explore the outdoors in the Northwest suburbs. From Busse Woods to the Crabtree Nature Center, our community has incredible outdoor spaces that bring us together,” Morrison said. “I encourage everyone to join me online for virtual conversations and in-person at Busse Lake for a fishing derby to learn about some of the outdoor activities the Northwest suburbs have to offer.”

Because capacity is limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic, attendees are encouraged to RSVP through Morrison’s Facebook page.

Co-sponsoring the fishing derby with Morrison are Friends of Cycling in Elk Grove, the Arlington Anglers, Shedd Aquarium, the Forest Preserves of Cook County, Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago Board Commissioner Corral Sepúlveda, and the Northwest Municipal Conference.

The fishing derby has a long bipartisan history. For many years the event was hosted by Cook County Commissioner Tim Schneider (R-15th) before Schneider lost his bid for reelection to Morrison.

Other Virtual Outdoors Week events include a Monday, June 14 virtual conversation with Forest Preserves of Cook County officials, a Tuesday, June 15 virtual conversation with Brookfield Zoo officials, a Wednesday, June 16 virtual conversation with Chicago Botanic Garden officials featuring Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and a Thursday, June 17 virtual conversation with Shedd Aquarium officials.
