Sidestream Elevated Pool Aeration (SEPA) Stations

Canal Junction Station SEPA Station
in unincorporated Lemont, Illinois

f a new project that adds much-needed oxygen to the sluggish Calumet-Sag Channel and the Little Calumet River which stretch 42 miles from Lake Michigan to Lockport. At five separate sidestream elevated pool aeration (SEPA) stations, water from the channel is lifted 12 to 15 feet and allowed to drop over a series of weirs to create a waterfall and add oxygen to the waterway. These waterfalls create a healthier waterway and are an attractive addition to the riverbank. A serene park-like setting encourages people to enjoy the quiet beauty of the area. Rare species of birds are returning as the water becomes more pristine. Most importantly, the stations have eliminated the need to build costly advanced treatment plants to meet water quality standards.

The American Society of Civil Engineers named the SEPA Stations the outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement of 1994.
